This is nothing new...  I think it was at Akademy in Glasgow last year, but 
could have been already in Dublin, since the games were shaping up pretty 
early compared to other KDE4 applications.

I was finished with something I had to do, and walked in to a talk about the 
games.  Interestingly enough the speaker was just talking about KReversi, my 
old application that I maintained for KDE3 at that time, and showing off some 
of the new features (scalability, theming) for the coming KDE4.  Cool!

But then he continued with showing a screenshot of KReversi from KDE3 with 
it's green background where I had tried to resemble the green felt of a real 
Reversi board.  And said something close to "... and compare this with the 
KReversi from KDE3!  Who would ever want to play something like that?!" I 
kept my mouth shut at that time, but I can tell you that I lost a lot of my 
drive to work on the games at that point.

PS.
I had also made sure that the code was *very* clear, so that's not really an 
argument for the KDE4 versions, even if I have to admit that they in general 
look much better -- including KReversi.
