Ok, I guess using 3D to do something that's really 2D bothers me about 
the way "gratuitously switching coordinate systems" bothers you :-). So, 
I won't delete my patch, but I won't try to make you accept it either.

(FWIW my own formal education is as much math as computer science. I 
also love math, just not enough to take it up as a career in a way that 
would result in less hacking ;-).)
