G'day,

I'm not sure how usable it might be in reality, how's this for an
option d)? Replace the undo/redo toolbar buttons with a set of media
player style controls. It might be overkill, but it has the advantage
of using an interface that most users are already familiar with.

First     (|<)  Undo all
Previous  (<)   Undo
Play      (|>)  Begin redo "movie" from current position
Pause     (||)  Stop redo "movie"
Next      (>)   Redo
Last      (>|)  Redo all

I especially like the idea of an Undo All button as it removes the
need for the Restart Level action.

Out of interest's sake, on average how many moves does it take to
solve a medium difficulty KAtomic puzzle?
