[Kde-games-devel] kolf status update

Hi,
I'm not going to be around over the Christmas period, so I thought it would be
a good idea to give you all an update on the status of Kolf.

I have now updated most of the graphics so that it uses SVG. I'm not 100%
happy with the new look yet, but I think it is a step in the right direction.
I'm particularly unhappy with the the colour of the grass and the slopes at
the moment, and the only thing I really love is the new look of the bumpers
(the small red circular things) whose look was heavily based on the bumper in
a mockup made by johnn_ol, so thanks for the idea johnn_ol, sorry only know
your name on IRC.

The use of SVG is now at the stage where someone a bit more artistic than
myself could have a play with the SVG and dramatically improve the graphics
without having to touch the code. So if anyone has any ideas they want to try
out then feel free to have a play :)

Also, I'd like to say sorry to those people suggesting a more 3d view,
particularly Half-Left who did a mockup, which looked very nice, but would
require almost a total rewrite, and would basically result in a totally
different game, which is not what I want to do.

It's worth pointing out that I am well aware the kolf is a long way from
completion, edit mode is broken, the view cannot be re-sized, there is only
one ball colour (I'm still thinking about how to handle ball colours), there
is no sound, the interface is a bit of a mess, there are some performance
issues on some of the levels with moving platforms, slope colours only depend
on direction, not on angle and there are many other minor bugs. So don't
worry, I'm well aware there is still quite a bit to do.

Hope you all have a good holiday, and if anyone does do anything interesting
with the SVG I'd love to see it, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to
reply to any emails before early January.

Thanks to everyone who's given me ideas about the graphics so far, they've
been invaluable.

Paul Broadbent
