Reproducible with 16.0-CURRENT before – not after – an upgrade to: 

FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT main-n284672-e6a77f81d1eb GENERIC-NODEBUG amd64 1600014

With e6a77f81d1eb: there's a relatively brief peak in CPU activity only when
the blackout ends (when the lock screen appears with a prompt to unlock). 

At least in VirtualBox: something seems wrong in that the screen goes
immediately to blackness (not a preferred wallpaper) at lock time. This can be
a separate bug.
