What worked before on my two systems was that sddm showed a graphical greeter,
and I could log into my Wayland Plasma session from it. Sddm itself was
probably running X. What I'm seeing today is probably not so much sddm's
problem but rather my session starting up, my previously stored windows opening
very briefly and then a crash back into the console upon which sddm picks
itself up again and shows the greeter. In the background the Wayland Plasma
session does seem to remain active, judging by the running Firefox processes in
the background that were autostarted from it. I haven't been able to dig any
deeper due to time constraints for now.
