It does the same thing according to CMake's manual?

"
-v, --verbose

    Enable verbose output - if supported - including the build commands to be
executed.

    This option can be omitted if VERBOSE environment variable or
CMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE cached variable is set."
