I personally never get it to work well on any Linux as well.

If you look at the bug reports for kmail you'll find similar reports for
other distributions as well, for example
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=384277
is basically the one I hit the most when I tried it on FreeBSD.
