My gut reaction is "does this have anything to do with recent messing around 
with cmake / qmake / ninja".

Probably not. 

My second gut reaction is "does this have anything to do with sudo?" I don't 
use sudo, but su - directly, and this port built normally just now. Have you 
got an up-to-date portsnap?
