For me, HAL has always been extremely unreliable. When I plug in my 
iPod, it is always recognized by FreeBSD and can be mounted manually, 
but it hardly ever shows up in media:/. I need to reconnect it several 
times until suddenly, HAL realizes that there is a new device. Maybe 
this is a symptom of general unreliability and you are experiencing the 
same?
