  There's definitely a legibility issue here. I do, however, think the gradient is a sleeker solution. The problem for me has actually been with the icons themselves. They're too scrawny and become more legible when thicker:

  My fave solution would be to tweak the icons (maybe have special ones just for this use case) and to strengthen the gradient more. But this solution here works as well and it's not a big deal.
