I do, however, think the gradient is a sleeker solution. The problem for me has actually been with the icons themselves. They're too scrawny and become more legible when thicker:</p>

<p>My fave solution would be to tweak the icons (maybe have special ones just for this use case) and to strengthen the gradient more.
