Hmm actually, on second thought, I think it makes more sense to put the tag in 
the file, instead of the branch. For instance with amaroK we're currently 
still developing 1.1.1 in HEAD, in order to focus on bugfixing, and plan to 
branch only after 1.1.1 release. So our latest stable branch is currently the 
outdated amarok_1_0_branch.

With a file "LATEST_STABLE_TAG" the packager could easily fetch the version we 
intend him to use.
