Have you tried with something like notepad.exe, just to rule out an
issue with Office?

Have you tried running kwin with the --sync option? You might get some
clues that way. It sounds like it could be a kwin issue but it is hard
to tell. Have you tried with a clean slate of KDE settings (i.e. rename
~/.kde)? What else is different between the KDE2 and Metacity
environments? Different library path? Different display depth?

I don't have the problems but the environments are also very different.
