Hi
I translating the latest strings for Kalzium, I came across a some that
seem a bit unclear:
The definition of Element:
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:28
#: rc.cpp:2216
msgid ""
"Matter that cannot be broken down into simpler matter. Chemical
elements are "
"cornerstones of Materials. Elements consist of atoms that consist of a "
"nucleus of positive protons, neutral neutrons, and a shell of electrons."
While not exactly wrong, arguably all matter "consist of atoms that...".
I would suggest replacing the last sentence with something like:
"Elements consist of atoms with nuclei having the same number of
protons. Hence all neutral atoms of an element also have the same number
of electrons."
The definition of Phase:
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:79
#: rc.cpp:2266
msgid ""
"Through chemical composition and physical attributes, homogeneous
portion of "
"matter that separated from its environment in its expansion through a "
"surface."
I found that difficult to understand. Maybe it could be reformulated as:
"A portion of matter that is homogeneous in chemical composition and
physical attributes and separated from its environment by a surface."
This is what wikipedia writes:
"In the physical sciences, a phase is a region of space (a thermodynamic
system), throughout which all physical properties of a material are
essentially uniform." ... "A simple description is that a phase is a
region of material that is chemically uniform, physically distinct, and
(often) mechanically separable."
The definition of SI Unit:
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:91
#: rc.cpp:2278
msgid "Measurement unit using International Symbols."
I think "Measurement unit belonging to the International System" would
be better.
On atomic masses:
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:132
#: rc.cpp:2320
msgid ""
"Mass of an atom, taken on a scale where the mass of a carbon atom is
12u. In "
"elements that consist of different isotopes the mid-range mass of the "
"isotope mix is given."
According to wikipedia the mid-range is the arithmetic mean of the
minimal and the maximal value. However, the atomic mass is the weighted
average mass of all isotopes of an element.
Heating coil is probably not what is meant here:
#. i18n: file: data/tools.xml:37
#: rc.cpp:2501
msgid "Heating Coil"
and here
#. i18n: file: data/tools.xml:38
#: rc.cpp:2503
msgid ""
"Heating coils are used to heat flasks and other containers. Multiple
heating "
"coils can be connected with a thermometer so that the heat will not
exceed a "
"specified temperature. It is possible to use a magnetic field inside the "
"heating coil to stir fluids with a magnetic stirrer. This will homogenize "
"the fluid in terms of temperature and composition."
I think either "Hot plate" or "Magnetic stirrer" would be better (see
Wikipedia)
Finally, "Mix(es)" should probably be "mixture(s)" in the following
messages:
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:24
#: rc.cpp:2212
msgid ""
"Separation of a liquid solution (homogeneous mix) into its components "
"through evaporation and condensation. In a fractionary distillation the "
"process is repeated several times in a column."
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:32
#: rc.cpp:2220
msgid "Heterogeneous mix of two liquids."
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:36
#: rc.cpp:2224
msgid "Processing a homogeneous or heterogeneous mix to get pure matter."
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:38
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:46
#: rc.cpp:2226 rc.cpp:2232
msgid "Mix"
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:47
#: rc.cpp:2234
msgid ""
"Matter consisting of differentiated matter, combined in non-set ratios.
"
"Homogeneous mixes have a coherent look, heterogeneous mixes "
"consist of multiple phases."
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:67
#: rc.cpp:2254
msgid "Homogeneous mix of multiple pure materials"
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:103
#: rc.cpp:2290
msgid "Heterogeneous mix consisting of a liquid and solid matter."
#. i18n: file: data/knowledge.xml:132
#: rc.cpp:2320
msgid ""
"Mass of an atom, taken on a scale where the mass of a carbon atom is
12u. In "
"elements that consist of different isotopes the mid-range mass of the "
"isotope mix is given."
