I am afraid that was a mistake due to the italian use of the word.
"polygonal" should be intended as "polygonal curve"
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyconal_chain)... Sorry.  This
should be corrected in the sources, actually.
In kig then "polygonal" refers to a (open or closed) line made of segments;
a closed polygonal that does not selfintersect is thus the boundary of
a polygon.
A polygon corresponds to this wikipedia definition:
A polygon is a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path, composed of a finite
sequence of straight line segments (i.e., by a closed polygonal chain).
