Dag Jos,
I think there is no sarcasm here. In the UK (& America) sports
has become quite common usage through ``journalese'' (the self-
consciously fancy language of print and radio/TV journalist),
and is quite normal to see not just in press releases, but in
review articles, and general comment.
It still carries the implications of natiness and pride to which
Shelagh alludeed, but not strongly. In fact the only reason to
avoid sports in favour of has (or even features) is that it
may be viewed as cliche or hackneyed language - but that is
very context dependent, and sports is fine here.
