Subject: [kde-edu]: KAssociate (an idea)

I was looking for examples of educational software on google, and I ran
across a page on women.kde.org that lists a couple of ideas for
educational software (written, I believe, by annma).

One that caught my attention was a word association game. Basically, you
are given a word and four other words. You decide which of the other four
words are the closest match.

It seems like the hardest part of a game like this would be building a
word association database. My first approach would be to get a list of
words and then give each word associated with it a weight. This would
take a lot of work to assemble a list, and every translation would
probably take almost as much work.

As for an interface, something similar to KAnagram would probably work
pretty good.

So what do you think? Does anybody have any ideas of resources to help
with a word association database? Is this something that could really
benefit kde-edu? I'm thinking about making it, but due to time
constraints I probably won't be starting soon.

Hi Jeff,

This does sound like a good idea. Far too often I have students that are not familiar enough with the language of a subject and this would be a great way to help them build a broader vocabulary in a subject.

Something that I am familiar with is visuwords.com. It is flash based and links to all sort of words. For its back end it is using WordNets dictionary/database from Princeton University (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/). I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it could be a start.

Cheers,
Ben
