OpenBabel. On the other hand, the same thing (loading methanol.cml in 
kalzium) works fine here, so it looks very much like a windows-specific 
(portability issue) bug in OpenBabel.

I'd say, the best you can do is write to:

openbabel-devel at lists.sourceforge.net

with a complete backtrace.

P.S. I don't think avogadro (i.e. the libavogadro-kalzium snapshot of 
libavogadro) is involved here. Kalzium has its own code calling OpenBabel 
to load molecules. See file kalzium/compoundviewer/openbabel2wrapper.cpp.
