Good Morning,

As a teacher I think that $HOME (that being my home directory not the students) makes the most sense for three reasons:  1.  It is a directory that I will be accessing most often anyway  and  2.  I know that less technically inclined teachers would find it easier to not have to navigate or search for another directory.  3.  This option would still allow the technically inclined to put a link from their home directory to somewhere else if the choose.

Just my thoughts.

Biiiing - I was triggered and make myself available for answering.
In KNS2 system-wide data will integrate better with user-downloaded data. This 
is true for data already provided by distros, but also for such system-wide 
additional deployments. As long as the location is within the KFSSTD, we 
could offer a simple configuration option. If the location is outside of it, 
it will be hard, for not every program has the same structure under /usr as 
it has under $HOME. But for KDE programs it won't be difficult.

I'd like to know from a teacher's point where the configuration option should 
go. For example, it would suffice to modify the system-wide *.knsrc files 
(which contain installation targets) on the teacher's machine, which could 
have a network drive mounted, and the teacher will then be prompted for a 
password before installation.
As I see it, there are many different school distros out there, and most of 
them already provide some network integration between pupils and teachers. We 
shouldn't duplicate this in kdelibs, but we can make good use of it.
