Ralf,

I do not know if you meant to have a sort of widgets in Qt/KDE that would be
more like the actual harware used in a laboratory. Googling qt+laboratory
gave me Qt4Lab, and one article about it on the KDE dot news. 

On the units side, for developing applications, I know a very interesting
Java library called jscience (http://www.jscience.org). You can do nice
things with the units and quantities using that library. It uses Apache
license.
