Short answer: because your version of KStars is too old! The Qt
date/time classes are to blame; they do not allow for dates before
1752. We have recently replaced the Qt classes with our own date/time
classes that eliminate this restriction. So, either upgrade to KDE
3.3, or if you don't want to do that, we are going to release a kstars
tarball that is equivalent to the 3.3 release "soon". Keep an eye on
our website.

(be aware that the simulations accuracy gets worse and worse for more
remote dates)
