I don't have a solution, but:
- this is clearly not a bug in khelpcenter, although I'm not sure the proper
product, perhaps kwin?
- please post the Xorg log - it should say something about what monitors it
recognizes
- what happens if you start X with only the 1440 monitor connected, rather then
unplugging the other one after starting X
