This way we lose a lot of space in width.

I've never tried it, so can't judge if it's good. But I would suggest that:
1. Paragraphs of text shouldn't full-width, because it's harder to
read when lines of text are too long.
2. The whole width can be used for content other than plain text
(figures and tables.)
