It was bad memories of mine, sorry. Connectors ("connecteurs") are only 
between sentence parts : "therefore", "then", "by the way", etc. They can be 
adverbs or conjunctions. It's more restrictive a notion than the "function 
words". I don't know if English grammars know this notion.
