I am having the same problem, does anyone have a fix?

Had much of the same problems. It stoped at ipc
section of splash screen. I ran the startkde scrpt
from with in cygwin prompt, and although it complains
it can't find ipc any where, it runs find. And yes,
much better than kde2.
