Try the mininal starting procedure 
1. Set the nessessary environment for kde2 (You find it in the startkde script.
2. start xserver 
   ~/.xserverrc &

3. start kde 

kdeinit +kcminit +ksplash +kdesktop +kicker +kwin 

After that the desktop should come up.
