Please give a try to the Wayland session where I implemented this feature years ago.

Available by default:
* 4 finger swipe left/right: switch virtual desktop
* 4 finger swipe up/down: open desktop grid/present windows

There is no configuration interface yet. If you are interested in working on that I recommend contacting the Plasma development mailing list.
