Luckily, we develop end-user desktops and the people who develop the other 
parts of this system are normal human beings that we can talk to.

I'd suggest using xattrs, and get distro people to start enabling it by 
default.

Other things to do would be to gray out the metadata editing stuff when viewing 
files on a filesystem without xattrs, with a short explanation, and get kio to 
warn you when you try to copy files with xattrs to a filesystem that doesn't 
support xattrs.
