It's just as likely that I may want to back up my data with the metadata.

Also, considering many file formats support embedded revisions and comments, 
before sharing stuff you should always run a cleaner. Many a big company were 
caught putting out documents in Microsoft Word formats where one could read 
older revisions and comments.
