one other small point ... that button there is to clear text. if it is also 
used when there is no text to do something else, this leaves the user with 
having to figure out when it just clears text and when it does something else.

(note: this would be even *worse* if it was always shown in all text fields)

if we can avoid such cognitive overloading of elements, esp when there are 
other ways of accomplishing the desire effect (and in this case, it's possible 
to provide the proper behaviour with a completely passive/responsive 
interface), we should avoid doing so in the name of elegance.
