This argument contradicts your argument against "SystemTrayItem":

If you want to emphasize that it is not supposed to be shown in a 
special place (be this place called "system tray" or "notification 
area" or "thingy space") then you should not include a term indicating 
a certain location in the name, i.e. I suggest dropping "Area" from the 
name.

Of course, KNotificationItem is even more similar to 
KNotify/KNotification, but I think we can live with this.
