I agree. The idea of message-indicator is not to reimplement logging in
an applet, but rather to provide an applet for the user to browse
through the list of notifications.

Our goal really is to get as much code accepted upstream as possible. I
wrote "will probably bring in the next Kubuntu" because:
- work on this port has not been started yet
- if KDE svn is frozen by the time this applet is ready, it will
probably appear in Kubuntu before reaching KDE tarballs

Note that these are my own interpretations of what is going on, I am
still in the process of learning how Canonical works.
