I can't use KMail in kde4

Are you using a KDE3 .kde/share/config/kmailrc?
Does this file contain a line "folders=$HOME/Mail"

And that won't work because of the KConfig and $HOME problem,
which Thomas Braxton and ossi have promised to fix very soon.

As a workaround you could replace $HOME with your real home dir.

But SMTP doesn't work anyway.  IMAP doesn't either.. I don't think.
