System tray status

What is the status of the system tray in KDE 4? So far, I've never seen it 
working - it seems to be a fixed small square inconveniently placed in the 
middle of the screen where it gets covered by other windows, without any 
means of moving it elsewhere. And AFAICS, applications which run in the 
system tray (including KAlarm) don't actually get their icons appearing in 
the system tray.
