I set my close button on the left, on its own (instead of, as Aaron suggests,
on the right) for two reasons:

* If it's on the right, it's awfully close to the top button of the scrollbar.
* The window menu button that has been traditionally on the left side for
ages across lots of window managers and windowing systems closes the window 
when double-clicked. That makes it a sort-of close button already.
