I would not suggest taking an image as input, I just wanted to mention 
pixmap-using styles (I remember this old marble-one in KDE1+2, also there is 
Baghira/OS X-like styles), but I would think that those styles are 
responsible for delivering an "average color" that can be used to base 
contrasting colors on.
