I've uploaded a preliminary version of Blitz, the graphics library I mentioned
previously in the "State of kdefx" thread. You can download it at:

One thing: some of the stuff I didn't write for KImageEffect is missing. Back
when it was decided KImageEffect would be replaced I took the stuff I was
using and made a separate library for my own use. That is what Blitz is.
Stuff I wasn't using I dropped. Nonetheless back before it was decided that
KImageEffect was going to be replaced *I did* port everything.
I just can't find it... haven't used it in a long time... The stuff in this
tarball is what I have been maintaining and working on.
if I can't find the ports I did of other people's work I can always redo it.
Whether I do this or not will depend on what if the library gets used.
Otherwise I'll just wait for Quasar development to start and work on that.
There isn't API docs yet but there is a small, lame, test app I hacked up. A
simple image on a QLabel thing. And of course the attached README.

* General Information (07/25/07)

Blitz is an interm image effect library that people can use until KDE4.1 is
released. KImageEffect, the old image effect class is being dropped for KDE4.0
and the replacement, Quasar, won't be ready until KDE4.1. Blitz gives people
something to use in the meantime.
At first glance Blitz may look like a KImageEffect2. That is what I originally
intended. Nonetheless most of the effects have significantly changed so
may operate differently. Many of the methods in KImageEffect were quick hacks
and ports I made. With Blitz I finally sat down, read my old code, and
reimplemented everything. In some cases this was just code cleanup and
bugfixing but in many other cases I used better algorithms and/or custom MMX
code. Expect differences, hopefully for the better. I'm a little older,
a tad bit wiser, and a heck of a lot less drunk these days >:)
I plan on porting much of the good stuff to Quasar once it is ready so don't
hesitate to email me if you have a problem or find a bug! My email is

In order to help people porting from KImageEffect I've added a bunch of notes
below about some of the various changes you will find. Much of it is just
my rambling about what the methods do but hopefully you will find some of it
useful. Not all changes are mentioned here, just the ones that stand out to
me.

* A few notes about MMX
*
For floating point I used AMD 3dNow! and not the more common floating point
SSE extensions. 3dNow is being depreciated in favor of SSE but I have one of
those odd AMD Athlons that only support the integer SSE instructions. I
usually note if something uses 3dNow or just normal MMX acceleration and in
any case all the methods have C++ versions that should still be a significant
improvement over KImageEffect.
I also extended KCPUInfo. It can now detect both 3dNow! versions I and II as
well as MMX-SSE.

* Smoothscaling
*
There are two new smoothscaling methods, smoothScale() and smoothScaleFilter().
The smoothScale() method is a port I did from Imlib2 to QImage ages ago that
was originally written by Rasterman and Willem Monsuwe and supports MMX. My
version eventually found it's way into Qt:

but I don't believe it supports the MMX routines. If/when it does the copy
here will become obsolete. At least Gwenview and KSplashX also include their
own copies of my port.
Rasterman and Willem knew how to write a smoothscaling algorithm ;-)
Originally I took the algorithm used in NetPBM and Qt3 and added MMX/3dnow
optimizations. It ran in about 1/2 the time as Qt3. Then I ported Imlib's
C algorithm and it ran at about the same speed as my MMX optimized one...
Finally I ported Imlib's MMX version and it ran in less than half the
time as my MMX algorithm, (taking only a quarter of the time Qt3 did).
After further optimization it seems to run at around 1/6th.
The other smoothscaling method is smoothScaleFilter(). This was originally
based on ImageMagick's ResizeImage() and supports various filters. It's
a higher quality, (thus slower), scaling method. It's pretty popular and I
know of at least one other image viewer that includes it's own port of it. My
version has been fairly heavily reworked. I was able to inline and optimize
lots of stuff so it should be relatively fast.

* Convolution
*
There are two new convolution methods, convolve() and convolveInteger().
Convolve uses a floating point matrix and supports 3dNow! acceleration while
convolveInteger() obviously is integer and supports normal MMX acceleration.
I was pretty excited when I wrote these because convolve is often used in
image management and can be used as a basis for a lot of different effects.
Having fast accelerated versions is very cool. In Blitz this is now used for
sharpen(), antialias(), emboss(), and convolveEdge().

* Inline HSV and Interpolation
*
This is also new. Some algorithms need to either work in the HSV colorspace
or interpolate pixels in the RGB colorspace while inside large loops. In order
to optimize this I wrote inline implementations that at least GCC can handle
without problems. I'm not sure if this is something that will be made public
or just used internally, and I know Zack has some interesting interpolation
stuff going on inside Arthur that I haven't really checked out yet.

* Blurs
*
The old blur is now gaussianBlur() and has been totally rewritten. The most
significant change would have to be that it now actually works properly, but a
close second would be I added a ton of MMX/3dNow! acceleration. Nonetheless
this is still a higher quality, slower blur. For a faster one I looked at
Imlib2 and snagged it's algorithm. This is now the default blur() method.
In the meantime Zack has written a few blur methods as well. I'm not sure if
some will be dropped or we will just have a lot of blurs ;-)

* Edge detection
*
The edge() method was rewritten to use the Sobel algorithm and has an MMX
version. You can also use convolveEdge() for convolution based edge detection.
*
* HSV Contrast
*
The HSV contrast method has been rewritten, works as expected, and uses a
nifty little lookup table I came up with that saves some expensive math :)
There are other small efficiency improvements and a bugfix where I was
treating brightness as luminosity.
*
* Grayscale
*
This uses the same algorithm as Qt but supports MMX SIMD to operate on all the
pixel components at once. It's a cheap, fast grayscale method.
There is also an additional grayscaleBrightness() method that uses the "value"
component of the HSV value. I've used this in algorithms that require pixel
intensity but it probably won't be included in Quasar. Consider this legacy
code.

* Despeckle
*
Now takes 1/4th the memory that KImageEffect did. It's still a expensive,
(read: slower), effect though...
*
* Swirl, Implode, Wave
*
Same algorithms as before but rewritten to be cleaner, fix a few obvious
bugs in the geometry, and use inline interpolation.
*
* Equalize and Normalize
*
These also use the same algorithm as before but have been rewritten. I was
able to get rid of some floating point math and no longer need to promote
values before I use them so it should be considerably faster. It's also *much*
cleaner and more readable.
*
* Gradients and rotation
*
Other than basic changes for Qt4 these are unchanged from KImageEffect and
possibly obsolete. You can now use QPainter on a QImage with gradient brushes
and rotate images using either QTransform or QMatrix.
I can possibly see keeping these around as cheap, fast methods since I believe
they should be slightly faster than using a painter or calling
QImage::transformed(). If I'm wrong about this, (I haven't tested it), they
will be dropped.
