Ideas for Student Projects

Some days ago I had a talk with an computer science prof here at the Vienna
University of Technology. I tried to find out whether we could cooperate on
some KDE-related projects.

Well, the bad news is that all CS education is done with Java and any
non-cross-platform project (i.e. a project that does not automatically run on
any other platform once it's "compiled") is really hard to sell. Furthermore,
the prof used Linux on his desktop, but not KDE, because GNOME looked way
more polished and gave him the impression that Gnome was years ahead of KDE.

Anyway, the good news is that the Austrian computer society has a contest for
Open source projects:
    http://www.ocg.at/ak/osp/contest/index.html
The (high school or university) students are supposed to work on projects (~2
Months) that are not necessarily restricted to coding. In fact, other
activities (UI design, graphics, documentation, etc.) are explicitly
encouraged and allowed as a project, too.

Now, I'm looking for some KDE project ideas that I can propose for that
contest. The students are supposed to choose one of the proposed projects (or
they can propose their own ones, of course).
If you heave any idea for such a project (e.g. clean up the whole UI of some
application, implement some great plugin, etc.), please tell me.

The other possibility would be topics for bachelor or master theses or other
lab projects. The problem is just that the students hardly know C++ (not
knowing Qt is no excuse, as that is quite intuitive to learn)...
If you have any ideas for these, I'll also try to get something running.

Cheers,
Reinhold
