That's a step in the right direction, yes. But with the mimetype spec we have 
shared mimetypes but we still don't have a spec that defines the preferred 
application (see http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Standards/mime-actions-spec ). 
It would of course be a good idea to write such spec, two years ago we sat 
together and agreed how such a thing should look like but it sort of got 
stuck there (primarily because it didn't seem to make sense to change 
mimetype handling before KDE 4)
