Scott's suggestion was not to limit the width to an arbitrary maximum
value, but to ensure that there is a sensible minimum width.
This is very important for accessibility. Some people need to increase
their font sizes to 20 or even 30 to be able to read the screen. We
cannot expect them to know every obscure setting in KDE that is needed to
make the system usable to them.
I strongly suggest to implement either Scott's suggestion for a font-based
minimum width, or David's suggestion to use Scott's algorithm as default.
