You saved my life (and one bug report less in KDE). ;-) I don't know why 
I didn't notice it. Maybe because I set it to the desired size 
sometimes back in the past (read some months ago) and forgot about it 
and now by having this issues with kicker, I had to re-add the 
quicklauncher to the panel and it was reset to auto OR the auto setting 
behaves now differentely. But I don't care now, as I have the icons 
with the desired size.
