If you don't crop, then you can't align icons in a grid anymore.

Same thing: one long filename, and you lose a lot of space due to the grid becoming too high.

The default of 2 lines sounds fine to me - and to the reporter of http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85937 BTW
(who also asked for this to be configurable).

Personally I'm for committing the "make it configurable" patch.
