I also plan to work on KMDI  (and it looks like nobody really wants to 
maintain it), and I'm happy if somebody else would do it as well. BTW, 
with your forked copy we will have a lot of KMDI's in the KDE CVS (5 
actually), but unfortunately it seems to be the only solution right 
now. In kdewebdev/lib/compatibility there is an up-to-date fork of KMDI 
and other needed libraries to compile and make it work with KDE 3.1.x 
and 3.2.x, so you can start from there. KDE 3.1.x fixes are not 
backported to the main KMDI, because we anyway wish to drop KDE 3.1.x 
support soon. 
 So, with the above I'd like to say two things:
- - in case of API changes (additions), maybe it would be better to 
discuss (but as I follow the KDE CVS list, it's not so critical for me)
- - bug fixing is more than welcome there
- - I'm fine with reindenting and even with the vim lines (I don't use 
vim, but Kate, but if you add the Kate lines as well, that should be 
fine)
