Instead of re-generating the complete database on disk it could be split up in 
multiple per-directory databases that would need to be updated when files are 
installed in the directory (like the font caches) That will make it harder to 
make easy to use cross-linked indexes but we could generate those in memory 
in a kded module. (KDE 4)
