Take a look at quanta/quantacommon.cpp, 
checkMimeGroup(const KURL& url, const QString& group).

The important part is the KMimeType::findFormatByFileContent call.

But the point regarding KFind, that it should find the strings present in 
binary files is valid, and I agree with that.
