Ok, I had a quick look at the existing ones. Well, all this looks like 
duplicated work. So a "global" OSD might be an even better idea.
I think I got your "one size fits all" wrong. IMHO a class at such a central 
place like kdeui should not provide too specialized functions that just 
output stuff in a slightly different format (like displayChannel() from the 
QtVision OSD). But maybe I'm wrong.
OTOH KOnScreenDisplay seems more customizable, though I did not test any of 
the other ones in real life.
