i personally think that smtp/imap etc went way beyond it 
and that this makes plenty of sense, its not all that far
from a cdburner:/ or from trash:/.

it provides a much nicer interface and is a much more natural
way of doing it. it is after all a simple "symlink" to the 
actual place in which the fonts are installed.
