It is a Qt bug.  I have still dealing with TrollTech about it:

Hi Benjamin,

I'm afraid we cannot modify this behaviour, as it would break a lot of
applications (QFileDialog for one...). You can simply call the slot
yourself when you call setCurrentItem().
