Using pkgconfig with autoconf in the KDE-configuration process to find headers

What about using pkgconfig with autoconf?
This is a better method than searching
through some common folders for dev. headers.
I know that pkgconfig is used in Red Hat
and perhaps other distris (I don't know).

The good thing is that pkgconfig can be
made optional in the configuration process
and help to find the headers.

This will help people who don't want to put everything
into /usr.

GNOME used pkgconfig, too (IIRC)

I would like to "hear" the opinions
of some core devs, so please reply.
